President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday in an attempt to move along a U.S.-backed framework for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks before time runs out on what was originally a nine-month period of negotiations.
Repeating 60 years of Arab rejection of Israel, Abbas has said "no" to compromise on virtually every critical issue that Sec. Kerry has brought forward – in contrast to Israel, which is working hard to make progress toward peace.
Abbas said "NO" to recognizing Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people – rejecting the basic principle of "two states for two peoples."
Abbas said "NO" to U.S. proposals for security in the Jordan Valley.
Abbas said "NO" to compromise on Jerusalem that would safeguard religious freedom and provide the PA with a capital in parts of east Jerusalem.
Abbas' chorus of "NO" and continuing rejection of peace with the Jewish state threatens to torpedo the peace process once again.
